All workshops are conducted live online via Zoom and follow the Amherst Writers & Artist method for writing workshops. For workshop guidelines and more info about AWA, see the about page.

January

Setting the Stage

Get your creative energy flowing with Setting the Stage — a daily workshop all about finding your rhythm, building creative habits, and actually making stuff happen.

A mix of afternoon and evening meetings, daily Monday through Friday. Sessions include a mix of activities, including discussing readings–articles and book excerpts about creativity, habit-building, and workflow–coworking sessions and guest speakers. Together we’ll apply what we’ve learned and make progress on our individual projects in a supportive environment.

January 5th-January 30th–Mon & Tue 12pm-1pm, Wed & Thu 8pm-9pm, Fri 3pm-4pm
Daily attendance is not required, but participants are encouraged to attend as many sessions as possible.

Journaling Jumpstart

Jumpstart your journaling practice with a week of prompts, dedicated journaling time and community support.

Offered three times a year, January, July & November, this workshop intends to build a foundation for beginning a regular journaling practice using a variety of prompts, short writing sprints and reflective discussions. Each session meets for one week, Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 8:00am (ET). They begin with a short check in and warmup, followed by 15 minutes of dedicated writing time and end with a few minutes of sharing and reflection.

Write Around the World

Write Around the World workshops allows beginner, emerging and experienced writers to experience a workshop space that holds safe and creative space using the Amherst Writers & Artists Method. This is also a once-a-year fundraiser to support the social justice programs offered by AWA. 

Through the month they’ll be daily writing groups with a choice of facilitators. See full event calendar here.

Writing Workouts

A series of mini writing workshops to sharpen your skills and experiment creatively.

Whether you’re a seasoned writer or just starting out, Writing Workouts will sharpen your skills while exploring your creativity. We start with a short warm-up to get the juices flowing before working with two exercises/prompts designed to practice a specific craft element. We’ll end by sharing writing and celebrating each other’s hard work. This is perfect for anyone looking to improve their writing skills in a fun and interactive way.

Workshops are live on Zoom and will not be recorded. Each session is about 45 minutes long; 5 minutes for the warmup, 30 minutes working with exercises/prompts, ending with about 10-15 minutes to share our work. Some will be independent exercises meant to strengthen a particular writing skill or craft element, andd others may be applied to larger work in progress. Each session is stand alone and will focus on a specific area of writing.

While workshops are not recorded, I will provide a pdf with any shared resources and the suggested prompts/exercises. However, I believe the magic of workshops is they foster community, accountability and engagement. Please be sure you can attend live before registering. I do not offer refunds.

Creative Habit 6 Week Writing Workshop

In this workshop, we’ll read and discuss select chapters from The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp. Together we’ll explore ways to strengthen our creative practice. Each week will include an assigned chapter reading to be discussed. Meetings will also include. Each workshop will included timed writing sprints, the opportunity to share your work and receive feedback. The workshop will use the AWA method, participants agree to adhere to the essential practices and provided guidelines.

Poetry As Spiritual Practice

Poetry As Spiritual Practice by Robert McDowell

In these hour-long workshops, we’ll combine poetry and spirituality as inspiration for our writing practice. We will utilize a variety of readings, exercises and concepts from the book Robert McDowell’s book, Poetry as Spriritual Practice, as a way into our own writing practice, in addition to using specific poems as prompts. For the purposes of this workshop spirituality is defined as seeking a connection with something larger than ourselves. Everybody is welcome regardless of religious affiliation, beliefs, etc. The goal is about intentionally connecting with poetry as a soul enriching practice.

This is a creative writing workshop, and the focus will always be on the writing.

Fantasy, Sci Fi & Horror Poetry Writing Workshop

A poetry workshop dedicated to fairys, ailens and monsters.

We’ll read and discuss selected poems, noting the possible inspirations and the key elements identifying the genre. Drawn from the reading, prompts will be offered for timed writing sprints between 10-20 minutes. Partipants will have the opportunity to share their work and recieve supportive feedback.

Meetings will include a mix of activities, including reading discussions, guided writing exercises, independent work sprints and the opportunity to share your work and receive supportive feedback. Coordinating Chaos Mid-Year Review

Join us for a focused and collaborative Mid-Year Review and Planning Session. Together we’ll reflect on the progress made so far, celebrate key achievements, identify challenges, and realign priorities for the remainder of the year.

August

AWA Monthly Online Write

These groups are opportunity to experience the AWA Method via Zoom, offered by AWA each month. During the two hours, you’ll write on the spot to a prompt or two provided by the facilitator. Then, you’ll break into small, facilitated groups to read aloud what you’ve just written. If you choose to share, you will receive positive, affirmative feedback from the small group.

One of this program’s goals is to be a fundraiser for AWA. Tickets are available at a variety of donation levels. Please choose the one that best suits your budget. If you’d like to attend for less, you can join our AWA Writer membership and receive eight online writes per year for $5/month or $50/year!

Witchy Ways Halloween Writing Workshops

Get witchy with me this October; draw inspiration from witchcraft practices, stories, and poems for your own magical creations.

In this four-week workshop, we’ll write together using a variety of prompts. The prompts will be inspired by all things witchy: spells and curses, tarot and oracle cards, herbal healing, lunar cycles, famous fairy tale witches, etc. Prompts are a suggested starting point; modify them to fit your needs or ignore them and writer anything you like. Write in any style, form or genre. Workshop format is excellent for writers of all levels, especially beginners with little or no experience.
